Drain Field Repair in the Lehigh Valley, PA

The drain field is the most expensive part of your septic system to replace — which is exactly why it deserves a careful diagnosis before anyone talks about digging it up. We evaluate failing drain fields honestly and fix what's fixable.

How your drain field works

After solids settle out in the tank, liquid effluent flows to the drain field — a network of perforated pipes in gravel trenches (or chambers) buried in your yard. The soil filters the effluent and helpful microbes finish treating it. A healthy field quietly does this job for 25 to 40+ years.

Fields fail when something disrupts that process: too many solids escaping the tank, hydraulic overload from excess water use, or a thick biomat (a slimy bacterial layer) sealing off the soil. Lehigh Valley's clay-heavy soils in some areas drain more slowly, which makes proper maintenance even more important here.

Signs your drain field is in trouble

  • Sewage odors in the yard, especially near the field area
  • Standing water or soggy ground over the field during dry weather
  • Unusually green, lush grass in stripes over the field lines
  • Slow drains and gurgling throughout the house that pumping didn't fix
  • Sewage backing up into the home — if this is happening now, see emergency service

Important: these symptoms can also come from a full tank or a broken pipe — both far cheaper fixes. That's why we diagnose before we prescribe. A surprising number of "failed drain fields" we've been called to were actually full tanks.

What we do for a struggling drain field

Full evaluation

We check the tank, measure sludge levels, inspect the distribution box, and assess the field's surface and soil conditions. The goal is to answer one question: is this field overloaded, clogged, or truly at end of life?

Rejuvenation options

For fields that are overloaded but not destroyed, options can include: resting the field by reducing water load, pumping the tank to stop solids migration, releveling or replacing the distribution box, and in some cases targeted treatments. We'll explain what has a realistic chance of working for your specific situation — and what doesn't.

Replacement planning

When a field is genuinely beyond recovery, we'll tell you straight and help you understand the path forward: site evaluation, permits through your township and county, and what the replacement process involves. We won't sell you a rejuvenation treatment we don't believe in just to get a job.

Protecting your drain field: the owner's manual

  • Pump your tank on schedule (every 3–5 years). This is the #1 field protector.
  • Never drive or park on the field. Compaction crushes pipes and destroys soil structure.
  • Divert roof drains and sump discharge away from the field area — extra water is the enemy.
  • Don't plant trees or deep-rooted shrubs near the field. Roots seek out the moisture and invade pipes.
  • Spread out water use. Space laundry loads across the week instead of marathon wash days.
  • Fix leaky fixtures promptly. A running toilet can send hundreds of extra gallons per day into the field.
